Ceramic plate /shallow dish - 14.3 cm x 14.3 cm x 1cm high, approximately 0.5 cm deep.
The sage leaf plate was inspired by one of my garden herbs - a pineapple sage plant which I have used in several ceramic pieces.
After hand rolling a slab of clay pineapple sage leaves were impressed into the plate. The clay was fired three times at various stages in creating the finished piece. After the first firing I used coloured slips to emphasise the delicate vein structure of the leaves, and refired the plate. Then, I randomly added drops of bronze glaze and added a bronze glaze border. Adding a transparent glaze over the entire surface creates a mingling of glazes on the border. The piece is signed on the underside, which is left unglazed but protected with liquid quartz.
